Key Stage 3 English, Maths & Science Booster

Key Stage 3 is taught during Year 7 to 9 at secondary school. The KS3 courses are taught by fully qualified secondary school teachers who specialise in the subjects that they teach.

These courses are designed to build the foundation blocks of skills and knowledge required to perform well at GCSE level, in all core subjects of English, maths and science.

An increasing number of schools are now starting their GCSE teaching from Year 9, as opposed to Year 10. It is therefore of growing importance that pupils are well equipped to be able to meet the challenges and rigours of the GCSE syllabus for these core subjects.

KS3 English

The KS3 English course is designed to develop high standards of language and literacy skills, with a strong command of written and spoken language. We encourage our pupils to read widely and gain a passion for literature in order to help them develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually.

Spoken Language

The development of spoken language skills in pupils is highlighted in the national curriculum as an important area of focus. At Excel Tuition Centre we aim to teach pupils how to speak confidently and effectively. This is achieved through a range of formal and informal discussions and debates, where pupils are required to present their views and ideas in class.

Reading

Our pupils are encouraged to read a wide range of texts, both fictional and non-fictional. During our KS3 English classes, pupils will be taught how to analyse and critique challenging texts independently, through developing a range of skills. The pupils will work through a series of texts, both pre-1914 and contemporary, including prose, poetry and drama.

Writing

At Excel Tuition Centre, our pupils are taught to write accurately, fluently and effectively for a wide range of purposes and audiences. We help pupils understand how to plan, draft, edit and proof-read their written work in order to produce well-structured pieces of writing.

Grammar and Vocabulary

Our KS3 English classes consolidate and extend pupils’ knowledge of grammar and vocabulary through studying the impact of grammatical features, as well as identifying new vocabulary, found in a variety of texts and resources. Our pupils are encouraged to read regularly and to analyse the texts to help develop their knowledge and understanding further.

KS3 Maths

Our KS3 Maths classes are designed to ensure our pupils become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics by developing their conceptual understanding and the skills required to apply their mathematical knowledge accurately in a timely manner. We aim to develop pupils’ fluency in mathematical reasoning and problem solving.

The core topics covered in our KS3 Maths classes include:

  • Number
  • Algebra
  • Ratio, proportion and rates of change
  • Geometry and measures
  • Probability
  • Statistics

KS3 Science

The KS3 Science classes focus on creating an understanding of the world through developing scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding of biology, chemistry and physics.

An increasing number of schools are now starting their GCSE teaching from Year 9, as opposed to Year 10. It is therefore of growing importance that pupils are well equipped to be able to meet the challenges and rigours of the GCSE syllabus for these core subjects. This can be achieved through developing a thorough understanding of the core principles of biology, chemistry and physics at KS3 level.
